Cherry Queens 2002
While on our annual Cherry Blossom walk, we walked around the entire path circling the basin, stopping for some Dove bars, and to breathe the perfectly cherry scented air.
When we arrived at the Jefferson Memorial, all of the beauty queens competing in the National Conference of State Societies Cherry Blossom Princess contest were assembled. I had a chance to mingle with Miss South Dakota and Miss Massachusetts.
I did not get their names but hope that one of them wins. If either or both of you manages to find this photo, please send me an email letting us know how you did. I will post the information here.
After an hour stroll around the Tidal Basin, we walked back to the office, congratulating ourselves on having the wisdom to let our phones ring into voicemail and our emails and faxes pile up, at least for two hours of good living.....

The names of the two cherry blossom princesses on April 3 in your photo are Ammielou Keating of South Dakota and Elizabeth Baebel of Massachusetts. The cherry blossom princess program began in 1948 as part of an effort to heal the wounds of war with Japan. But it is not a beauty contest. It is a college- level Washington classroom for one week where students get to meet top women role models, government and military leaders, journalists, and policy makers. The winner, the United States Cherry Blossom Queen, is chosen by a random process from 55 state and territitorial cherry blossom princesses sponsored by the state societies. Princesses also represent about 12 international embassies but they are not eligible for the Queen selection. The new U.S. Cherry Blossom Queen for 2002 is Elizabeth O'Connor of Connecticut who will represent the U.S. on a two-week visit to Japan in May. Since 1948, the winner is chosen by a random spin of a wheel of fortune at the Grand Ball which was held on April 5th. Whatever state the wheel lands on, that princess is the Queen for the next year.
